Surface Matters: Grit & Gloss Exhibition

Surface Matters: Grit & Gloss Exhibition

Organized by the Enamelist Society and juried by Anne Havel, Barbara McFadyen, and Charity Hall, 84 artists entered 151 pieces into the Surface Matters: Grit & Gloss contest. Of those, 67 pieces were selected from 40 artists worldwide. Surface Matters expresses the scope of techniques and design variety within the vast medium of contemporary enamels.

The brooch I created for this exhibition was my first attempt at combining my love for lapidary and my interest in exploring enamel. Using the natural and polished surface textures of the stones as a starting point, I did several experiments with enamel to replicate stone colors and surface textures and create an overall design that merged the two mediums into one cohesively piece.

Hand cut stones used: tourmaline in quartz, uvarovite garnet, manmade opal. Crushed peridot, quartz, and lapis. Enamel on formed copper, sterling silver, yellow gold fill.
