Organized by the Enamelist Society and juried by Anne Havel, Barbara McFadyen, and Charity Hall, 84 artists entered 151 pieces into the Surface Matters: Grit & Gloss contest. Of those, 67 pieces were selected from 40 artists worldwide. Surface Matters expresses the scope of techniques and design variety within the vast medium of contemporary enamels. This year I went to Tucson with a list of specific stone material to acquire. I was mostly interested in smaller slabs vs the year before when I was looking for larger rocks. Before my trip I created a scavenger hunt list with photos and descriptions. Pro tip: Share lists like this with any jewelers you travel with so you can help each other find what you're looking for. Digging for Tourmaline in California

California is known for a particular type of crisp pink Tourmaline. You can also find plenty of green and black tourmaline in the state. There are a few mines in southern California that I was curious to check out while I was down at GIA in Carlsbad taking some lab classes for my Gemologist certification.   Some people look for new restaurants to check out when they travel. I, on the other hand, look for mines to go get dirty in.
