Rock Yard Wonders: A Day at The Gem Shop in Wisconsin

During a recent trip to Wisconsin for the Third Ward Art Festival, I had the pleasure of spending four hours at The Gem Shop in Cedarburg, exploring their legendary rock yard and basement. Having previously shopped with them at the Tucson and Denver Gem Shows, I was excited to finally explore their home base and take my time selecting materials I was eager to cut.

The Gem Shop is a true paradise for rock lovers. I started my adventure in their basement—which felt like stepping into a mine (only without the digging)—where I could choose from rows of neatly labeled bins filled with stones. Their yard, on the other hand, offered barrels of rough material, including jaspers, agates, and fossilized material. The sheer variety was overwhelming, and I spent hours carefully selecting pieces that caught my eye.

Because I visited the rock shop before the art festival began, I had the chance to chat with fellow rock enthusiasts who later explored my work at the festival. If you're ever in Wisconsin and have a passion for rocks like I do, The Gem Shop is an absolute must-visit!
