Apatite can be found in Brazil, Mexico, Myanmar, Canada, the US, Sri Lanka, Africa, Madagascar, and several other countries. Apatite is also a source of phosphorus for fertilizer, acids, and chemicals. High quality apatite from Madagascar can be faceted into gemstones. 

Named in 1788 for the Greek word apatite, meaning "to deceive", as apatite can look like several other gems such as topaz, beryl, tourmaline, and peridot.
