Once believed to aid in sleep and keep evil spirits away. Today it's known as the stone of transformation because it helps with emotional pain by absorbing it and can help during times of change and aid in personal growth.
The name malachite comes from the Greek word "molochitus", which refers to the mallow leaf of similar color. Malachite is often used for decorative purposes due to the botryoidal banded orbes and patterns.

Mined as early as 4000 BCE in Britian. Copper is often produced by mining malachite. Long ago malachite was used as a mineral pigment in green paints.
