Sodalite derives its name from the Greek word soda, meaning "sodium," and the suffix -ite, from lithos, meaning "stone" or "mineral." As a member of the feldspathoid mineral group, sodalite is often used as a substitute for lapis lazuli. While it shares a similar appearance to lapis, sodalite typically lacks the brassy pyrite specks that are characteristic of its more famous counterpart.
