Quartzsite is unlike any other gem and mineral show I’ve attended. As I described in Part 1 on my two part piece, it’s a gathering place for lapidary enthusiasts, rockhounds, and collectors who drive or camp in their RVs in the middle of the desert, creating a vibrant and welcoming temporary community. The event isn’t just about buying rocks—it’s about connecting with others, learning new techniques, and discovering the latest materials.
One of the most delightful surprises was the abundance of pre-cut slabs available at Quartzsite. Compared to the Tucson Gem Show, the selection was far greater, making it easier to find exactly what I was looking for. While slabs cost more than rough rock due to the cutting labor, they offer a clear advantage—you can see exactly what you’re buying, and they’re much lighter to transport than large, uncut rocks. You know what that means... you can buy MORE ROCKS!
Another highlight was the openness of the community. Everyone I met was eager to share tips, discuss cutting techniques, and recommend their favorite vendors.
Quartzsite Pow Wow Tips 2025
If you’re planning to visit Quartzsite, here are a few tips to make the most of your experience:
- Rent a car: The area is remote, and having reliable transportation is essential.
- Pack water and snacks: Staying hydrated is key, and I recommend stopping at a grocery store to stock up on essentials for your hotel fridge.
- Dress in layers and bring sun protection: The January sun can be intense, but the weather can fluctuate, so pack sunscreen, a hat, and clothing you can adjust for the conditions.
- Do your homework: Research pricing, new materials, and rare rough in advance. Facebook lapidary groups and Instagram are great resources for staying updated and informed.
- Bring cash: While most vendors accept credit cards, some operate strictly on a cash-only basis. Cash also gives you a bit more negotiating power, and larger purchases often earned me discounts on materials or even a freebie or two thrown in.
Would I go back? Most definitely. If you don’t have time constraints, you could easily check out Quartzsite at the end of the Pow Wow and then drive to Tucson for the start of the gem shows.
