The Quartzsite Pow Wow, originally established in 1967, is a lapidary enthusiast’s paradise. Spanning just five days in January, this event hosts over 500 vendors, most of whom are small-scale U.S. miners specializing in rough rock. Unlike the glitzier Tucson Gem Show that follows shortly after and boasts over 300,000 vendors from all over the world, Quartzsite maintains a more intimate and niche vibe, attracting vendors and visitors who are deeply passionate about lapidary work.
To make the most of my visit, I flew into Palm Springs, rented a car, and drove two hours to my hotel in a small town near the California-Nevada border. From there, it was just a 30-minute drive to Quartzsite. I arrived the day before the event began to make sure I could attend the opening on Day 1. With a carefully planned itinerary and excitement to discover unique materials, my Quartzsite adventure was ready to begin.
The show runs daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., providing ample time to explore the incredible variety of materials and connect with the community. Across the highway, there’s another smaller show called Desert Gardens, featuring local rock vendors. I found a few rare, one-off rocks there, making it well worth a visit for those on the hunt for unique finds.
Many vendors at Quartzsite only participate in this one show, offering limited runs of specialized materials. Armed with a list of vendors I had researched and contacted in advance, I was ready to dive in and explore the treasures they had to offer. After spending an hour at each of the first two vendors I had eagerly sought out, I realized I needed to pick up the pace—or risk missing out on the rest of the vendors! Gasp!
